WASHER KNOCKING ON SPIN CYCLE.....?

Ok here is a new one for me. I have a washer that is knocking when you lift up the lid during the spin cycle. It sounds ok when it's spinning but when you stop it it makes a horrid knocking sound. I tested it empty and full with a balanced load and it does the same thing. It does not appear to be hitting the side while making the knocking sound. Any thoughts?

It is a Whirlpool model.

Thanks,
